Album Review: Calpurnia’s Scout Is Rock History With A Fresh Sound
I CANNOT be the only one that looks at Calpurnia, and thinks, “What the hell did I do with my childhood?” Releasing their EP, Scout, these kids are REALLY GOOD! Yes, Finn Wolfhard is on Stranger Things, and I am sure that that has influenced people to listen. The thing is, Scout, does not disappoint. On the contrary, it impresses you with 6 guitar driven tracks that hail influences from the Rolling Stones to Mac Demarco.
Scout may have a variation of rock influences, but they all seem to come together with a new, retro feel. Tracks like, “City Boy” and “Louie” reminded of the works of Kimye Dawson or The Moldy Peaches; cool eccentrics perusing the NYC art scene for its “anything goes mentality”. While such a mentality may be associated with “wildness” or “madness”, it really is about being mad enough to be creative, innocent, and look at life with fresh eyes. Such things you feel when you hear songs such as, “Wasting Time” and “Greyhound”, that have their Beirut influences in being ornately simple.

For all the melodies they orchestrate, like their opus “Waves”, the biggest asset to Calpurnia’s Scout is that it is an easy listen. It goes through its 20 minutes like water from a running faucet; simply gushing forward sound as if it is ingrained and destined. Wolfhard vocally rasps and drawls as if he has studied every lead vocalist from the post-punk to indie rock scene. In sounding like so many before him, in style and annotation, he becomes something new, appealing, and someone you want to hear more from. Yet, do not think Calpurnia are giving Kids Bop lyrics.

Once again, to the contrary, this group feels like an amalgamation of rock history, which means their lyrics are as succinct as they are sentimental. Concise, catchy, and completely charmed, Calpurnia create hooks and verses that are likable, which is the key to longevity. The fact that they are accomplishing so much in artistry now makes you wonder what other grounds will they break. For More Information On Calpurnia Click Here and To Buy Scout on June 15 Click Here.
